After putting up with Telus' web hosting problems for 6 months I have decided to move my site to a dedicated host.
I have hosted my site on my home computer for a few years now, which meant dealing with the BS that is Telus. It also meant slow connections, as Telus' "business" account is nothing more than a regular high-speed account with a dedicated IP address.
So if there was a Telus network problem (which happens all too often), then my high-cost, "business" site is lost as well. After they "upgraded" my hosting plan in January 2007 I have had nothing but trouble with my emails bouncing. After 6 months with no satisfaction I am migrating to a local ISP (BlueFur).
During the migration there will likely be a window where the site is down, as I need to reconfigure the site to work on a remote server.
But once it is migrated, you should see faster page loading and more reliable uptime. Adios, Telus morons.
Jun 19 2007 - The Update
Well that was not too painful. I have migrated most of my site to my new hosting server. The photos are not up yet as there are some hard coded links to file paths that need to be corrected.
My email (mike at mikeshore dot com) is also working so all in all I am pretty happy. BlueFur's ControlX panel is also much easier to use than the Telus interface.
All in all, a much smoother transition than I expected. I feel sorry for the poor saps who answer the phones for Telus, as they have to deal with customers who are angry
at Telus and not them. I think Telus is a hopelessly slow, out of date dinosaur and I am glad to be rid of them.
Aug 9 2007 - Photos are coming
I am working on getting the photos back online. Migrating from a Windows platform to a Unix platform was more work that I thought.
Unix filenames are case-sensitive, and the new host uses a different folder structure.
All photos should be back up in a few days, thanks for your patience!
